I love all things that are quirky in geometry (e.g. the Reuleaux triangle) so this one naturally impresses me. It’s called a Gömböc, and no matter which way you put it down, it will right itself - without having a weight at the bottom.  It’s the only shape that can do this.
Legitimus Maximus will probably enjoy this the most, because apart from being a math lesson, Turtles with short legs have naturally evolved to this shape to make it easier to right themselves when flipped over.

Ultra-tiny frogs discovered living like faeries inside pitcher plants (via io9)
These 10-12mm frogs were found in Borneo living in pitcher plants. They were originally thought to be juveniles of other larger species of frog, but they’re actually adults of a micro-species!
Scientists discovered them when they followed their loud croaks to the plants. I’m sure there’s a joke about the inversely proportional relationship between size and performance in there somewhere.
My island of birth has all the cool stuff.

Hey look, what is that?
Crazy trap door spider with an ass that looks like a scarab stamp or an Oreo cookie. It’s not fair that it evolved to be so stealth.

What do you do when you discover something weird in the jungle? Poke a stick at it. Really great clip of a young chimpanzee discovering a hidden camera in the wild.

bestofwikipedia:

Turritopsis nutricula or immortal jellyfish is a hydrozoan whose medusa, or jellyfish, form can revert to the polyp stage after becoming sexually mature. It is the only known case of a metazoan capable of reverting completely to a sexually immature, colonial stage after having reached sexual maturity as a solitary stage. It does this through the cell development process of transdifferentiation. (via Patrick Filler)

The goblin shark of Tokyo Bay will make you soil yourself - io9

This shark has a retractable jaw.  Sure it’s only 1.3 metres long, but it has a retractable jaw.  It’s body can remain behind while it’s jaw comes after you!
