My completed camera insert.  It’s got five exterior pockets, a cover flap with two magnetic closures and one velcro divider.
New things learned:
Top stitching
How to make bias tape
Sewing through velcro is a PITA
Attaching magnetic closures
Some sewing had to be done by hand because the foam was too thick to machine around.  And I’ve figured out some improvements for the next revision, but for now this one will do the job.
Quite pleased with myself over how it turned out in any case.

Go-go-gadget sewing machine!
Technically, this project should only have taken a day over a weekend, but I’d been busy and the only time I had was in the evenings.

So… I got it in my head to make myself a camera insert for my smaller, casual, non-camera bags for travel and general day to day.
Just need something with enough room for a camera body and attached lens most of the time (although occasionally I might want a spare lens/accessory as well) and the other bags are a leetle big for that.
Also found a great little bag on Etsy which would work great as a stealth camera bag, so I bought stuff to match. :D
Inventory:
Foam
Wadding (didn’t end up using)
Interfacing
Fabric
Magnetic clasp
Velcro (not pictured)
Thread
Wee bit ambitious as a project considering I haven’t touched a sewing machine since I was in primary school, but youtube will help me!

A couple of guys strapped a DSLR to a remote controlled car so they can take closeup photos of wildlife.
Very neat ground level perspectives.

Would a lava lamp work on Jupiter? (via kottke)

This guy Neil decided to build a centrifuge out of Meccano and used an Android phone running a G-force monitor to find out.

I approve of this type of geekery.
