元樂年輪蛋糕·台北 (via zeping)
I was trying to work out how this cake was constructed. The notes on the photo say the outside is cake, the white stuff is cream, those little semi circles are apple and the brown bit was 提拉米蘇. If you are proficient at reading Chinese you probably know what this is already. But I’m not that good yet.
So this was my thought process:
提 means carry or suspend… okay that brown stuff is suspended in the cream.
拉 is to pull. Okay, suspend pull, must be related to the fact that brown stuff is floating there.
米 is rice. So it’s rice based…
蘇 is apparently a basil or perilla. That’s weird. What would you make with rice and basil… I must be missing something.
Google 米蘇… ‘mi su’… ‘rice su’… No, still don’t get it.
Google 提拉米蘇… Tiramisu… what?
*goes over pinyin again*
tí lā mǐ sū.
Mother f-!
I am never going to learn to try enunciating words before I go searching the hard way…

Felicia Day’s birthday cake. What a work of art. (via felicia.day)
(Note: The top is styrofoam, I too was wondering how that was done)

The Vegie Bar on Brunswick St in Melbourne apparently makes vegetarian/vegan food that will appease even the fussiest of eaters. And the decor and setup reminds me a bit of The Moon in Perth, eclectic and very funky.
We only went there for afternoon tea, but that bread and butter pudding is absolutely divine. Most definitely my favourite bread and butter pudding now that The New Orleans in Northbridge is closed and I no longer have access to their amazing white chocolate version.
The flourless chocolate cake was also extremely tasty, but for an entirely different, and extremely heavy reason.
Two very different cakes for two different moods, both equally yum.

I ated this chocolate tart at Koko Black yesterday. It had a candied orange cream that was delish.
I also like how the staff use these suede-looking gloves to get the food out so they don’t melt the chocolate.

I keep seeing recipes for red velvet cake… Is it just incredibly trendy right now?

Dragon cake (via Astro-Lopithecus)
That’s a cake? Holy crap. Seriously.
I thought something with that much detail would have an insane layer of plastic icing with extra sugar bits for the wings and head ‘ornaments’. So I dug around his flickr to find out more about this phenomenal construction.

That’s what the cake looks like on the inside, a mess of different pieces of cake glued together with what I imagine is the filling described on the maker’s site, Mike’s Amazing Cakes (amazing? no shit!). I’m still not sure how those bits on the left and right are made or what they’re filled with. And that coloured outside looks cracked like M&M shell.
Completely, and totally, wow.

I’ve seen the magic mug cupcake recipes going around and the two I’ve tried left me feeling a little ‘ew’. So I tried to adapt it to make it less rich and evil. It’s not the most amazing cake that you will ever eat, but it’s not a bad snack (well two snacks, it’s quite big).
Ingredients:
- 4 tablespoons self raising flour
- 3.5 tablespoons sugar
- 2 tablespoons cocoa
- 1 egg
- 4 tablespoons milk
- 1.5 tablespoons light olive oil
- splash of vanilla essence
- 1 large mug
Method:
Add everything into the mug and mix well. Once you get to adding the liquids, if you find you’re reaching the rim of the mug, give it a bit of a stir and it should settle down a little. Put it into the microwave for about 2.5 minutes on high (1100W microwave) and voila.
You can spray the mug with cooking spray or wipe with oil if you like but if you don’t mind running a knife around the edge later it doesn’t make much of a difference and I wanted to reduce the amount of oil going in.
Also make sure the mug is a decent size, it’ll rise very high (mine rose then kind of fell looking like a long wilted cake) and may even overflow a little. Just wipe the microwave dish straight after you take the mug out and it’ll clean easily.
Oh and the mug is very very hot when it has just cooked. Use a mitt.
