A Modern Castle With 1,000 Uniquely-Shaped Windows - Architecture - io9

[It was] designed by Austrian artist, Friedensreich Hundertwasser, and built during the 1990s … Its diagonal roof is covered with grass, shrubs and trees and the facade follows an irregular grid organization. Waldspirale has over 1,000 windows, but no two are the same. The handles on the apartment doors and the windows are also unique.

So they just converted this church into residences. I think that’s a really novel idea, and I’ve fallen in love with the design (just from the gallery, I have to check this place out in person)…

Man, I wish I was rich so I actually had a chance of affording one of these homes.

I always wanted to buy a church to convert into an occult, science fiction/fantasy bookshop and Internet cafe.  But these residences look neat!

This vertical air ship - complete with penthouse, four duplex apartments, five smaller ones and glass viewing floors - will be lifted by hydrogen and propelled by solar power, leaving no carbon footprint.
Because, apparently, we have learned nothing from the Hindenburg.
Though the concept is kind of cool.

In total agreement on both counts.

A family discovered a clandestine chapel that dates back to the 1700s under their home when they decided to explore what was under a grate in their hallway.

A stairwell leads back upstairs through a cupboard in the dining room.

Mitsubishi bought a reef and built it out into an artificial island, a kilometer long, so the company would have a base for undersea coal mining operations in the area. And for many years, it was the world’s most densely populated place, with 85,500 people per square kilometer in 1959 — and 135,000 people per square kilometer in the densest areas. The name, Gunkanjima, is Japanese for “Battleship Island,” because the artificial island resembles a battleship when seen from the ocean. The island was completely closed down in 1975, when the coal ran out, and now it’s quite possibly the world’s largest ghost town. It looks like a dark fortress, its shadowy walls looming like death.

I’m waiting for the weather to warm up a bit to take a few more shots here. But if you’re interested in seeing more of this very intriguing street, I’ve provided the link to the Google Streetview page. It’s a much more haunting and sobering place in person, but I think this conveys the idea nicely.

Fascinating. I love the brass bedstead in the upstairs window at 1910.

This street is so strange and fascinating.  All these run-down looking places with windows and doors boarded up, and then you get these apparently well maintained ones scattered amongst them like 1941.  Such stark contrast.
