Okonomiyaki with Egg. (via foodhoe’s foraging)
Oh my goodness, why have I not done this yet?!
More like OkoNOMiyaki, amiright?
Yes you are!
Okonomiyaki (お好み焼き?) is a Japanese savoury pancake containing a variety of ingredients.
Kansai (Osaka)-style okonomiyaki is the predominant style of the dish, found throughout most of Japan. The batter is made of flour, grated yam, water or dashi, eggs and shredded cabbage, and usually contains other ingredients such as green onion, meat (generally pork or bacon), octopus, squid, shrimp, vegetables, kimchi, mochi or cheese. Okonomiyaki is sometimes compared to an omelette or a pancake and may be referred to as “a Japanese pancake”, or even “Osaka soul food”.
Most okonomiyaki restaurants are set up as grill-it-yourself establishments, where the server produces a bowl of raw ingredients that the customer mixes and grills at tables fitted with teppan, or special hotplates. They may also have a diner style counter where the cook will prepare the dish right in front of the customers.- source

In the Meiji period (1868-1912), Japan ended centuries of isolation and entered a period of rapid modernization after opening its doors to the world. The ensuing social and technological changes inspired a number of interesting urban legends.
Very interesting read. Love Japan’s folklore.

I was thinking that looked remarkably familiar. But kaya and Japan were two things I wasn’t expecting to see in the same context. It gave me great pleasure to see that the link talks about kaya. They even mention Peranakan. ^_^
Need to sit down later and read it properly with Rikaichan enabled.

I am highly entertained and delighted by the fact there is a journal article about this topic. You can find it in the Journal of Home Economics of Japan (日本家政学会誌 50(6) pp.571-579 19990615).

Solaryman by Yuki Aoyama | Spoon & Tamago
Solaryman (published by Piebooks in November 2009) is a photo-documentation of actual Japanese businessmen escaping from the mold that has characterized them for decades through the simple action of jumping. The photographs are quite humorous but at the same time filled with a restrained desperation, as if whispering to the reader, look at me… I have a personality. The intent of the book is to capture the hidden laborers who carry the world’s second largest economy on their shoulders and to make people think, instead of sweaty, balding old man, ah funky dude in a suit, or something like that.

December 10th is Apology Day. To commemorate, somebody made a site called Gomenne.jp (Gomenne means I’m sorry) that counts down to Dec 10 with a hot Japanese girl for each of the 31 days preceding the made-up holiday. You can click on each girl to see a detailed profile of her, as well as a video of her apologizing. This girl, 19-year old Asuka Morimoto, apologizes for eating all the steak at a family dinner.
